Every kitchen brief this year has started the same way: less overhead cabinetry, more light. Clients are trading a wall of wall-units for open shelving, a single tall pantry column, and a lot more glass.
The backlit glass-block island has been the standout request. It reads as a piece of furniture rather than a worktop, and profile lighting inside the block means the kitchen still has a soft glow after the overheads go off.
Hardware has moved the same direction as the rest of the house — soft-close everywhere, but finishes have gone warmer. Brushed brass and unlacquered brass pulls are outselling chrome three to one in our last two quarters of orders.
If you're planning a kitchen this year, the honest budget conversation is worth having early — a glass-block island adds roughly 12-15% over a standard laminate island, mostly in the lighting and structural support it needs.
